Goodness and mercy

God of passion, God of peace.

God of famine and of feast.

Verses

1. Father, hear the prayer we offer,

Not for ease that prayer shall be;

                                                            (The Lord’s my shepherd, I’ll not want)

But for strength that we may ever

Live our lives courageously.

                                                            (He makes me lie down in green pastures)

2. Not for ever in green pastures

Would we ask our way to be,

                                                            (He guides me to the path of blessedness)

But the steep and rugged pathway

May we tread rejoicingly.

                                                            (He leads me by the waters of stillness)

3. Not forever by still waters

Would we idly rest and stay,

                                                            (The Lord’s my shepherd, I’ll not want)

But would smite the living fountains

From the rocks along our way

                                                            (My cup he fills to overflowing)

4. Be our strength in hours of weakness,

In our wanderings be our guide;

                                                            (Upon his shoulder he gently lays me)

Through endeavour, failure, danger,

Father, be thou at our side.

                                                            (Goodness and mercy shall follow me)

Father, be thou at our side.

                                                            (Goodness and mercy shall follow me)

Father, be thou at our side.

God of passion, God of peace,

God of famine and of feast.
